Welcome to my Guam Trip!

Guam is about a 3 hour flight from Kansai Airport in Osaka Japan, located in Micronesia. It's a really small island and very cheap to fly there from were I am. I got the airport a couple hours early so I decided to have a beer with this cool australian guy who was just coming back from London/Paris, travel conversations are a great way to pass time. So anyhow my flight was good (flew with ANA), I even scored some deluxe seats where every seat had its own tv, I had the choice of like 15 different movies, that's alot better than usual. so I watched Daredevil and was disappointed.

Well when I got to Guam something was really making me weird... everyone was speaking english! wow! I'm not used to that. It's obviously really hot in this country as well so I only wore shorts from this point on. My first night was pretty dull because I got there at about 1:30am. so nothing much to do, even the club I wanted to go to was closed. oh well.

.
The next morning I woke up actually pretty late. I was really tired from all my crazy work in Japan so I guess my body needed the rest. but I woke to a beautiful view! wow! I decided to get ready and go to the beach! but first, I went to a T.G.I.F restaurant to get some good American food I've been craving. mmm... philly melt... but then right after I went to the beach. that was definitely a priority!

The beach is amazing! I rented a lawn chair for the day and then I went swimming! ooooohhhh yeah!!! That was sweet! Just floating around with nothing else to do but float around in the beautiful water. After swimming for a while I sat in the sun, then went snorkeling to check out some small coral colonies, and lay in the sun, then did some snorkeling and lay around again, then another cocktail and some more swimming... generally that was the pattern. The beach wasn't very full so that was really nice. Although it was the touristiest place on the island, it didn't really feel like it.

The weather was also great! I thought it was going to rain the whole time I'm there but it wasn't like that at all! Sure it did rain but it didn't bother me, it would rain for 20min then stop. and during that time I didn't feel the need to have an umbrella or anything of the sort, just let it rain on me, who cares! it was so hot anyways. I also went swimming while it was raining, no thunder or lighting, too many gaps in the clouds.

After a great deal of time laying around the beach I decided to pack up and start touring along the beach. check out more scenery and palm trees. As I was walking, I saw these guys semi hidden between some trees, they yell out "Hey! how 'r you doin' ?" I obviously reply "Great! how about you guys?" then they said "you want a beer?" and next you know, I'm drinking with the locals beachside! sweet! They've all grown up on the island and some have never left. completely islanders! for real (except for phil, he's been to japan and his japanese is slick, and so are his other 5-6 languages)! it was an honor to spend time with them. such a laid back attitude that it brought me right back to a Vancouver flavour of life. Telling me stories how they used to run around the same beach before all the hotels came along.

After telling me all about the real Guam, I got invited to dinner for some traditional guamanese food! ah yeah! but before we were going to make a stop over at the giant grocery store (well I'm used to the smaller ones in japan). We got the main ingredients: beef, shrimp, two lemons and two fresh coconuts (one which I took home with me, sorry customs). We got to my Prim's place (guamanese word for cousin/brother/good friend) and his home was full of animals! woah! cats everywhere, 4 dogs outside and a bunch of birds walking around.

It was my job in the kitchen to grate the coconut, so I sat on this cool little bench and went to work. after I was finish I was told to sit down and drink beer. hehehe... um.. ok! When it was all over it was quite a feast! The shrimp was broken down into bits and stired with coconut milk and the juice from the lemons. But it was sooooooooooooooo spicy!!! woah!! he then told me he cut up some hot peppers he picked from the jungle... hehehe.. oh yeah. that's ok, I just had to drink more beer to ease it up! also a thick beef stew was made. so good. oh yeah...

After getting really full, George and I decided to head out and go out a bit on the town. We went to a jazz bar back downtown (which wasn't really playing jazz, but it was live anyways) and there we met these two Tawainese guys who just got to guam too. After the jazz bar and many drinks our local tourist George took us on a tour of the infamous Guam strip clubs. Nothing too special there, all american girls surprisingly but not really. but we drank alot anyway.

By the time I got back to my hotel I really wasn't walking straight... I made sure that I would get a wake up call at 9:30 because I was getting picked up at 10:40 to go snooba diving (I'll explain what that is on the next page). Even when I got to my room I recalled the front desk to make sure I'm getting that wake up call. Then I crashed really hard on one of the beds.
